SCA has launched its first refurb facility!
Sweeping Corporation of America (SCA), the nation’s leading street sweeping company, has launched its first refurb facility in Memphis, TN. Built as a pilot program to increase equipment availability, SCA’s Fleet Maintenance team converted an empty building into a fully equipped refurb facility, complete with lighting, electrical systems, hoses, air compressors, and all other essential equipment.
Sweeper trucks are sophisticated machines, equipped with advanced electrical hydraulics and complex operating systems, and require specially trained staff for proper operation and maintenance. At the refurb facility, each truck undergoes a full evaluation and replacement of all major components, including chassis, engine, transmission, and body. The facility allows SCA to keep its equipment running as long as possible and improve uptime. It will also serve as a parts distribution hub, allowing for the disposal of older trucks and salvage of usable components for spare parts inventory. “Our end goal is to create a continuous supply chain, deploy newer and more reliable trucks with improved uptime, and reduce overall capital costs,” says Sarath Kumar, EVP Ops Excellence & Fleet.
He goes on to say, “Beyond refurbishing our trucks, this can serve as a training facility for new mechanics, where they can learn everything about the specialized components in our sweeper trucks.” SCA’s fleet includes trucks from multiple manufacturers, so mechanics and operators are trained to understand the controls and operating systems of each model, to work on them effectively and efficiently.
The project has been spearheaded by SCA’s Director of Fleet Maintenance, Kenneth Eden, who oversaw the development of the facility and established a model that can be replicated at future sites.
